MEXICO CITY (KCRA) —Gov. Jerry Brown has been promoting California business in Mexico City, where he is leading a trade delegation actively looking for Mexican companies willing to invest in the state.
On Monday, he found such a business.
"And since we have so many millions of people who come from Mexico, I would say Aeromexico has a very good potential for more and more travel," Brown said.
Brown wants to bring more Mexican tourists to the Golden State, to visit California's scenic wonders. With his new partner, Aeromexico, it could happen.
More than 7 million Mexicans visit California every year, and Visit California is launching a branding campaign designed to increase that number through TV commercials and banners prominently located in Aeromexico offices across Mexico City.
"We’re seeing huge growth in this market," said Caroline Beteta, president of Visit California.
"The Mexicans are spending about $2.9 billion in California. They’re actually our largest international market of all of the markets we target."
The partnership is good news for California's ski industry, which already pumps more than $1.3 billion into the state's economy.
"There was a time when we were getting pretty good traffic out of Argentina and Brazil," said Bob Roberts, president of California Snow, which supports the state's ski industry.
"That’s backed off, but we think with the economy that’s developing and really on fire here in Mexico, there’s some real opportunities for us."
The California delegation also got a taste of the art world Monday night at Soumaya, a museum that houses about 66,000 paintings and artifacts celebrating Mexican culture.
On Tuesday, Brown signs a partnership with Mexican officials encouraging the exchange of more university students in California and Mexico.
