Brazil Central Bank Says Economy Grew 1.35% in 2012

SAO PAULO--Brazil's central bank Wednesday said the economy expanded at a slightly slower pace in December, rounding out a full year of meager economic growth.

The central bank's economic activity index increased in December at a slower pace than in November.

The IBC-Br index rose 0.26% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis and 1.35% for full-year 2012.

The index is widely considered a leading indicator for gross domestic product growth but has been criticized recently for not capturing the tepid activity of the third quarter, when a slowdown in financial services hurt overall economic performance.

GDP grew 0.6% in the third quarter from the second. Many economists and government officials had been expecting growth of more than 1%, and the IBC-Br had indicated an even greater gain.

Fourth-quarter GDP data will be published by the Brazilian statistics institute, or IBGE, on March 1.
