Brazil’s Rousseff Says She’s Never Considered Resigning Her Post

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said she has never considered stepping down even as her popularity sinks and her ruling coalition crumbles.

“I have never considered resigning,” she said in an interview with SBT TV on Wednesday. “Disagreements can’t lead to the ouster of an elected president.”

Calls for Rousseff’s impeachment have regained momentum in recent weeks as her approval rating tumbles and Latin America’s largest economy heads for its worst recession in 25 years.

The president has stepped up public appearances in the past week in an effort to highlight her administration’s achievements ahead of nationwide protests against her government scheduled for Sunday.

Adding to Rousseff’s woes, her government’s budget accounts are being investigated by Brazil’s audit agency, which must decide whether the administration broke the country’s fiscal law by doctoring last year’s results.

An unfavorable ruling could provide the legal foundation to start impeachment hearings, opposition lawmakers say.

“I will talk about impeachment if and when we get there,” she said. Still, she conceded that the crisis has deepened since her 2014 campaign. Rousseff said the upcoming protests are “a normal part of democracy, but we have to avoid intolerance that brings conflicts that have no solution.”

The president defended austerity measures aimed at preventing a downgrade of the country’s credit rating to junk. “People may thing that I’m breaking promises made in the campaign, but they will see that with the adjustment in place and an economic recovery that it was needed,” she said.
