Brazil Industrial Capacity Use Falls In February to 82.6%

BRASILIA--Brazil's use of installed industrial capacity fell in February as industrial activity failed to maintain the acceleration seen in the previous month, the country's National Confederation of Industries, or CNI, reported Tuesday.

The group said utilization of industrial capacity fell on a seasonally-adjusted basis to 82.6% in February from a revised 84.5% in January.

The latest result, however, was up from 82.5% in February 2012. Use of installed capacity in the month rose in less than half of 21 industrial sectors survey, the report said.

According to the CNI, the latest data show that local industry hasn't yet embarked on a firm recovery expected this year.

"The variations between decline and growth of the indicators that measure industrial activity are signs that industry still hasn't found a trajectory of growth," the group said in an accompanying statement.

The CNI said lower use of capacity reported in February came alongside a decline in industrial sales, which fell 4.2% from January. Sales were up 0.5%, however, from February 2012.

Industrial employment, meanwhile, rose 0.4% from January, and was up 0.2% from February last year. The February data on industrial activity come as local authorities continue to seek measures to pull the country out of a slump in economic growth.

Brazil's economy grew just 0.9% in 2012 after a 2.7% expansion in 2011. According to recent market estimates, the Brazilian economy is seen growing about 3% this year.
