Brazil's January Unemployment Rises to 5.4% As Holidays End

RIO DE JANEIRO--Brazil's unemployment rate rose in January from December as companies let go of seasonal holiday workers, though joblessness remained near record lows.

Unemployment stood at 5.4% in January, up from 4.6% at the end of December, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, or IBGE, said Tuesday.

The median estimate in a survey of economists by local news service Agencia Estado had called for a 5.3% unemployment rate.

The IBGE said last month's unemployment rate was the lowest for January since the statistical series began in March 2002, highlighting the tightness of Brazil's labor market.

Joblessness in Brazil fell last year to a record-low average 5.5% despite a sharp slowdown in the economy, as resilient consumption bolstered the services sector.

But rising wages have also pressured inflation, which recently surged to its highest levels in a year and has raised speculation that the Brazilian Central Bank may hike interest rates in coming months.

Brazil's average monthly salary fell to 1,820 reais ($921.52) in January from BRL1821.81 in December.

The IBGE measures unemployment in six of Brazil's largest metropolitan areas--Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Recife and Porto Alegre.
