Mexico's Consumer Confidence Rises in July after Election

MEXICO CITY--Consumer confidence in Mexico rose in July from the previous month, while also gaining from its year- earlier level, the National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said Friday.

Inegi said the consumer confidence index was 98.9 last month, compared with 95.5 in July of 2011. Confidence also rose 1.19% from June in seasonally adjusted terms.

Mexicans voted in their next president on July 1.

Enrique Pena Nieto, who is due to take office in December, has vowed to implement structural tax, energy and labor reforms that are seen potentially stoking greater economic growth in Mexico.

Compared with June, consumers were more confident about the current and year-ahead prospects for the overall economy and their personal economic situations, and felt more able to buy big-ticket items such as furniture and home appliances, Inegi said.

Consumer confidence has steadily recovered from its record lows in late 2009, as the economy has expanded for 10 consecutive quarters.
