Yabrud's Products Reach Latin America's Markets

Damascus Countryside, (SANA) _ Like several industrial centers in Damascus Countryside, Yabrud City has started as a housing agricultural compound meeting all of its requirements through manufacturing the suitable tools for the handicrafts mastered by its people.

Later, the City turned into an industrial and commercial center which has attracted all the surrounding housing compounds as the commodities produced by Yabrud has started to be exported to several countries, particularly the Latin American ones.

Member of al-Qalamoun Office at Damascus Countryside Chamber of Commerce Abdullah Mebar said the distinguished economic transformations witnessed by Yabrud have resulted from the establishment of housing compounds around the City, and the openness of its people to other cultures.

Yabrud is the oldest inhabited area in al-Qalamoun as it dates back to thousands of years ago which makes it a central market for the industrial and handmade products.

The people of Yabrud have worked in weaving along with agriculture, thence the farmer was also an artisan.

The second phase in Yabrud's transformation represented in the close ties binding the expatriates of this City with the countries of expatriation, particularly Argentine since the beginning of the last century.

The expatriates have established new handicrafts and developed the old ones benefiting form the capitals and the expertise they have brought with them.

The third stage in the transformation of the City is when a number of Yabrud's citizens traveled to the Gulf states along with the upsurge in oil prices at the beginning of 1970s which led to a drastic change in the lifestyle in general as there was a pressing need for modern industries.

The markets of Yabrud were named after the handicrafts mastered by its inhabitants, and these markets used to produce the daily needs of the farmers while the surplus was exported to the neighboring areas and countries.

The craftsmen of Yabrud have been able to develop their work and skills which led to broadening the basis of production in accordance with the development of life and it complexites, in addition to the increasing foreign demand of the Yabrud's industries and the expand of the industrial facilities.
