Mexico's May Unemployment 4.8% Vs. 5.2% Year Ago

MEXICO CITY--Unemployment in Mexico fell in May compared with its year-ago level and was practically unchanged from April, the National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said Friday.

Unemployment among the 50 million-strong workforce was 4.8% last month, compared with 5.2% in May of 2011.

In seasonally adjusted terms, unemployment was practically unchanged from April of this year at just below 5%, Inegi said.

Urban unemployment, measured in the country's 32 largest cities, was unchanged in May from a year earlier at 6%.

Formal private-sector employment in Mexico has continued to increase, and the central bank last month raised its estimate for new jobs this year to be between 540,000 and 640,000, compared with its previous forecast of 500,000 to 600,000.

The growth hasn't been enough to bring overall unemployment down to the levels seen before the 2008-09 economic crisis, but many are finding work in the formal economy.

In the first quarter of the year, Inegi reported 13.7 million people were employed in the informal economy, or 29% of the working population, higher than in the year-earlier period.
